Our International Engagements
For decades, our institution has stood as an elite beacon of holistic male education, firmly anchored on our core pillars of academic excellence, moral discipline, and vocational mastery. Our history, international activities, and global footprint reflect an enduring legacy that continues to impact the world: Our Foundational Roots and Vision Our global story began at our very inception in January 1956. Founded under the auspices of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, our college was built through the profound self-sacrifice of our first principal, Rev. Fr. Denis Joseph Slattery (SMA). As a visionary Irish missionary from the Society of African Missions, Fr. Slattery named us after St. Finbarr, the 6th-century patron saint of Cork, Ireland—bringing a unique cross-continental dedication to our campus. From the outset, we broke traditional molds by becoming Nigeria’s pioneer bilateral school. We introduced a rich dual curriculum that combined demanding academic subjects with robust technical and vocational training—including hands-on woodwork, metalwork, and electrical engineering workshops.
A Globally Connected Alumni Network Today, the administration works hand-in-hand with a vibrant, international brotherhood of alumni via the St. Finbarr’s College Old Boys Association (SFCOBA). Our international branches, particularly our active SFCOBA North America Chapter, ensure that our mission remains globally supported. No matter the distance, our alumni remain fiercely proud to belong. Our diaspora chapters consistently drive international fundraising and project execution on our Akoka campus. In recent years, our old boys have invested over one billion naira to fund state-of-the-art infrastructure—including new hostel blocks, advanced IGCSE learning materials, and modern IT hubs. This continuous collaboration ensures our current students transition smoothly from our classrooms into international industries and higher institutions.
A Legacy of Global Sports Diplomacy Historically, our most visible contribution to the international community has been through our unparalleled athletic heritage. Under Fr. Slattery’s deliberate sports policy, St. Finbarr's became a legendary incubator for world-class soccer talent, famously dominating Nigeria's Principal’s Cup. We are immensely proud to have raised standard-bearers who went on to represent Nigeria and dominate the global stage at the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games, and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Footballing legends and national team icons like Stephen Keshi, Samson Siasia, Henry Nwosu, Nduka Ugbade, and Thompson Oliha all honed their skills right here on our pitches before making their marks internationally. Furthermore, our sporting excellence transcends football; we are proud to have nurtured Chidi Imoh, who went on to become the first African to run the 100 meters in under 10 seconds on the global stage.
Looking Forward, we are proud to maintain these stellar standards. Our students continue to shatter academic records, consistently recording outstanding performances in WAEC, Junior WAEC, and national JAMB examinations. As we approach our landmark 70th anniversary, we remain fiercely committed to adapting our historical foundations for a modern world. We are currently driving initiatives to integrate advanced robotics, modern digital drawing, and tech-driven technical workshops into our curriculum. From an Irish missionary dream to a thriving global network, we continue to shape young men who stand up anywhere in the world and boldly proclaim our motto: In Hac Spes Nostra (In This Is Our Hope).
